In an exciting exchange of knowledge and experiences, a distinguished international delegation from Seoul Rehabilitation Hospital embarked on a fruitful visit to Gainesville from February 26 to 27, 2024. Comprising a physiatrist, two occupational therapists, and two physical therapists, the group delved into an immersive exploration of rehabilitation practices. On the first day, the delegation toured UF Shands Rehabilitation Hospital, engaging in comprehensive sessions where they observed occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy sessions. The highlight of the day was a meeting with therapy supervisors and leaders, facilitating a dynamic exchange of insights. In addition, the group had the honor of meeting Dr. Sherrilene Classen, the Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy, who warmly welcomed them and shared the department’s rich history, particularly in driver rehabilitation research. Dr. Classen expressed eagerness for potential future collaborations, highlighting the value of international research partnerships.
The second day of the visit took the delegation to the UF Smart House, where they had a firsthand experience of the SmartDriver™ program. Engaging in a detailed observation of comprehensive driving evaluations, clinical assessment tools, driving simulators, and adaptive driving equipment, the delegation actively participated in discussions and question-and-answer sessions. Professor Beth Gibson, a certified driver rehabilitation specialist, introduced cutting-edge practices, leaving the international guests impressed and satisfied.
Throughout their visit, the hospitality extended by the UF Occupational Therapy Department was commendable. The delegation expressed gratitude for the insightful sessions, emphasizing the department’s impactful influence through shared experiences. The OT Department is hopeful that this collaborative visit will lead to positive impacts on clinical practices at Seoul Rehabilitation Hospital, as the guests return to implement their newfound knowledge and lessons learned. The UF OT Department looks forward to fostering continued international collaboration and sharing expertise in the ever-evolving field of rehabilitation.
