Interconnectedness of Interoception and Emotion: Fundamentals for Practical Use in Pediatric OT Practice

This course is designed to provide a foundational understanding on the topic of interoception and its inter-connectedness with emotion in pediatric populations. The course addresses impacts of interoception deficits, and assessments and interventions to utilize in OT practice.

Target Audience

This course is well-suited for occupational therapists, as well as OTD students looking to gain a deeper understanding of interoception and its impact on emotional regulation.

Educational Level

Intermediate: Information is geared to practitioners with a general working knowledge of rehabilitation and service delivery. Focus is on a basic understanding and application of the subject matter.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define interoceptive processing.
  • Describe interoceptive processing in relation to emotional regulation.
  • Discuss how interoceptive awareness can impact participation in activities of daily living.
  • Identify 2 or more specific assessments and frameworks to utilize when addressing interoceptive processing.
  • Summarize up to 3 intervention approaches to interoceptive processing in occupational therapy practice.

Completion Requirements

1 Contact Hour for State of Florida Occupational Therapy practitioners will be awarded upon a successful completion of a multiple choice post-test. Participants will be able to print a certificate of completion after completing a short course evaluation in addition to the post-test.

Instructional Methods

One (1) hour course during which the learner will view a streaming video presentation, reference PowerPoint® slides, and take a multiple choice post-test.
